I've got the transport out and note the capstan motor is a little noisy when I spin it by hand - not really bad just a little noise. Thought I'd lubricate the motor but I can't find where to do that. I've taken the backplate off but there is just a circuit board under there that appears to be attached to the rest of the motor. Can someone tell me where to put the oil?
I'll be cleaning and lubricating the capstan shaft as well and rejuvinating the pinch roller which actually looks to be in reasonable condition as does the capstan drive belt. Last thing before getting it calibrated will be to recap the thing. I'm guessing some of the sound quality issues could be from bad caps?
Hi thursty! Good that you located the source of trouble and now the output is correct. Wow and flutter go hand in hand with the capstan belt. This is to say your deck needs a new capstan belt. Although I am not absolutely sure, motor oiling is done at the pulley end. You need light motor oil. But better consult Sam about this. Calibration should not be a problem if you have the necessary equipment. The SM describes the procedure although it is a bit awkward, there is a simpler and effective way, which is supposed to work fine with any deck.
Besides you have front control for bias and level setting. Do you have Teac's dedicated accessory, the tone generator TO-8? A very useful tool for all decks of Teac's C-series. Can't go without it if you want perfectly flat frequency response with almost any tape available. Hope this helps. While you have your C-3X open, I would highly recommend changing the power supply capacitors.
Mine were quite tired and made a definite improvement in operation and sound. The rest of the deck seems fine. Sam was correct about some of the power supply caps going bad, btw. My deck started with low volume and gradually came up. Love my C-3X. Last edited by Tinman; at PM. I wonder if someone has done some work in here before as the capstan belt looks good as does the pinch roller. Also some of the caps in my machine are black and some are blue - not sure if that means anything.
I'm going to recap the entire machine I reckon as this machine is a keeper. I'll be doing the PS as well of course and then I'll put the mute transistor back and see if that works. Tested the unit and it plays beautifully. Tried to record and nothing on the LH channel! Thought to myself it's probably the record mute transistor - tested that and all good there.
Did a bit of tracing and finally found one of the signal wires near the head was broken - actually looked like it had been cut! Made a recording and played it back on another deck I have Optonica RT and it sounds nice on that as well so looks like head alignment is good. I've ordered new belts for it and once they come in I'll pull it to bits again and do a bit of recapping in the PS and probably in the signal path as well.
Really liking this deck. Nice job, well done. Something I did not really get: You mentioned you polished the heads. Arguably among the best heads of the late 's. The same heads have been incorporated in several Alpine decks besides the entire C-line of Teac. They are extremely hard and durable. I have a C-2 with exactly the same head in operation since !
What makes me curious: what do you mean by "polishing"? Was there any real need to do so, and how did you do it. Thanks Nick. I used a product called Scratchx which is made for removing fine scratches in car paint. The heads came up really shiny and no more fine scratches! Anyway, the sound now is really nice so no harm done I guess. Would you like to see your company or site here? Thread Tools. All times are GMT The time now is PM.

Cosmetically it's in mint condition so I'm hoping that is in fact the only thing wrong with it. It 'looks' like it could be a nice deck it has the brackets to mount on a rack so I'm guessing it may be a pro model?? A tape deck is the only thing missing from my system at the moment so hopefully this is worth the time.
I'm not home otherwise I'd post some photos, but I should be able to do that come friday or so. Thanks for any replies. I can't tell which noise reduction options it has, but it looks like it may be one of those odd-ball machines that can run at 3.
Messages: 1, Location: Paris, France. Messages: Location: New Jersey. I have the Tascam Pro Mark 1 which is the same deck. It is a very nice deck which is the first of the line of pro models that are still being produced and used by Radio stations. I actually use mine in my main system instead one of my two high end Nakamichi 3-Head decks as it is much less finicky than the other decks and if playing back tapes recorded in High speed the sound is also much better.
Teac makes replacement parts for the decks and will most likely have some belts for you. In my opinion it will be far better than any other ten dollar deck you could have found. VPIVinylspinner , Apr 8, Messages: 5, Location: Kingston,NY. Very similar to yours! Nice sounding deck.
Good luck with the belt. Its a bitch!!!! Mine had a belt melt down. Nice gooeey mess! Hopefully this did not happen to you.
